Sony sent over a copy of Morbius and while it wasn’t as cringe worthy as I expected it certainly wasn’t good either. In fact there wasn’t anything redeeming about it. The movie has become famously bad and that might actually be a good thing for a movie that otherwise would’ve come and gone with a whimper. Any press is good press, right? I didn’t find the movie as bad as Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which, personally, was the worst movie I’ve seen in a while, but I didn’t find it interesting either. In fact I was really bored by the movie and didn’t find myself rooting for any of the characters. Jared Leto plays Dr Michael Morbius who is suffering from a debilitating disease and experiments with splicing bat DNA with that of his human DNA resulting in super powers, naturally. We are supposed to feel bad for the character’s ailments but we’re never given a reason to really care about him. The overall plot and story has been done and seen so many times before that one wonders why the movie even exists. Dull and boring seems to be Sony’s thing lately see Uncharted. Michael Keaton was used in the films marketing and he’s only in the post credits scenes after his character gets, unfortunately, “multiversed” into this one. I hate that Keaton is tied to the Sony Marvel movies.
As per usual with a release from Sony the picture and audio are of great quality. They did usher in Blu-ray to begin with. I found the vampire visual effects to be a bit cheesy. Matt Smith as Morbius’ brother is almost laughable when he, too, goes vamp. Fight sequences look like video game cut scenes. If you’re looking for a bad 2000’s style vampire flick from Sony at least watch Underworld instead. While not a great movie it at least has a semblance of a plot and a solid lead. If you know your comic book movie history just looking at the pedigree behind this movie you should already know what’s in store. Tom Rothman. Avi Arad. And while I understand that they’re partially responsible for ushering comic book movies into the modern era they’re also responsible for butchering a majority of them as well. For every good X-Men film there was a bad one. Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Elektra, and Fantastic 4 to name a few. Look at the names of those involved and you will find they are the same.
I can’t wrap my head around Sony’s inability to evolve. They’re still making movies from the early 2000’s and don’t seem to possess the know how on moving forward. With Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter in various stages of production the idea of more shitty spider-verse movies being churned out is upsetting. I am not interested in any Marvel property Sony is putting out unless Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios have some involvement. Aside from No Way Home, which had the Feige assist, and the latest Jumanji films I can’t think of anything Sony has put out recently that has been successful. Spider-Man is keeping the lights on. Their current track record and forecast aren’t very promising. Morbius is a dull cliched attempt at an antihero origin story no one was asking for.
